A red-orange face fills the painting, crossed by black, turquoise, blue and green forms. The features overlap rather than align. An arched black structure surrounds the face, a blue-black shape cuts across its center and a smaller multicolored presence floats below.
The portrait appears to turn in more than one direction at once. Profile and frontal view coexist, producing a face that cannot be stabilized from a single position. The surrounding red collapses figure and ground into the same chromatic atmosphere.
The self is not concealed behind the mask.
It is produced by the mask’s contradictions.
